A public hearing before Littleton City Council on March 19 will likely determine whether a 19.5-acre parcel along South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton is rezoned from a residential suburban agricultural district to light industrial.

The action will set the stage for Breckenridge Brewery, currently at 471 Kalamath St. in Denver, to relocate to the west side of Santa Fe Drive. To the north is Meadowwood Village mobile home park, to the south is the Wolhurst Landing residential neighborhood.

Although some neighbors voiced objections to the development — citing traffic, pollution, height, noise and environmental impacts — the planning board OK’d the proposal at a February meeting.

Todd Usry, brewmaster and director of brewery operations, said, “The neighborhood concerns are legitimate and fair. It’s important we come across as responsible and as a group that wants to be a good neighbor.”

Usry said, pending an approval, closing on the property will likely occur in April.

According to the city, Designs by Sundown, a landscape company, owns 5 acres at 6855 S. Santa Fe Drive and Freeman Land Co. owns 14 acres at 6775 S. Santa Fe Drive.

Usry said Breckenridge would allow a garden center on the Freeman property, Silver Sage, to keep operating through next growing season. He anticipated groundbreaking to occur the first part of 2014. Designs by Sundown will move its offices to the site and will work on the brewery’s development.

The brewery is poised to become a destination center and will offer public tours. Plans include a visitor center with a gift shop and restaurant designed to open up to the north and west.

The buildings will include the brewhouse, administrative offices, a fermentation cellar and packaging hall. The buildings will encompass roughly 83,000 square feet with a final buildout of 120,000 square feet.

Concerns about the odors of brewing were addressed in the plan: “The new Breckenridge will employ a heat recovery vapor condenser. This equipment uses the waste heat from the steam to preheat water for the next round of brewing and, at the same time, condense the steam to liquid — removing 92 to 98 percent of the steam vapor, and the smell that comes with it, from the air.”

One building, according to the plan, will contain a stage for occasional afternoon music shows.

According to Glen Van Nimwegen, the development is consistent with the South Santa Fe Corridor Plan to create land uses that are community-oriented and generate revenue.

Founded in 1989, Odell Brewing was started by Doug Odell, his wife Wynne, and his sister Corkie. Twenty-three years later, the culture of family and collaboration still thrives, fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. In 2010 the brewery completed their fourth expansion, adding a wood-aging cellar, a 750 ml bottling line, and a 76 kilowatt photovoltaic system capable of providing 25% of the brewery’s peak energy demand. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is committed to serving the communities in which they distribute by sourcing local raw materials, and through their charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. The brewery’s tap room is open Monday through Saturday and offers limited release pilot brews, live music on Wednesdays, and daily tours.

90 Shilling

We introduced 90 Shilling, our flagship beer, at our opening party in 1989. For a while, we’d been wondering what would happen if we lightened up the traditional Scottish ale? The result is an irresistibly smooth and delicious medium-bodied amber ale. The name 90 Shilling comes from the Scottish method of taxing beer. Only the highest quality beers were taxed 90 Shillings. A shilling was a British coin used from 1549 to 1982. We think you’ll find this original ale brilliantly refreshing, and worth every shilling. 5.3% Alc. By Vol. 27 IBUs

Cutthroat Porter

Not quite a stout but definitely no lightweight, Cutthroat Porter is smooth and robust. Inspired by the classic London porters, we use dark roasted malts to create a deep, rich color and flavor that hint at chocolate and coffee. We named it Cutthroat Porter as our tribute to the Colorado state fish – with its own rich heritage and unmistakable dark coloring. And while we’re big fans of small batches, here’s to the currently threatened Cutthroat population reaching mass quantities. 5.1% Alc. by Vol. 43 IBUs

IPA

We took the traditional IPA, originally shipped from England to India in the 1700′s, and made it bolder and more flavorful – American Style. We’ve added new varieties of highly aromatic American hops to create a distinctive bitterness profile and an incredible hop character. 7.0%Alc. by Vol 60IBUs

5 Barrel Pale Ale

The distinctive hop character of our 5 Barrel Pale Ale is due to the extraction of essential oils from select hops. We treat 5 Barrel Pale Ale to an infusion of fresh whole hop flowers in the Hop Back and the Fermentor, as well as four hop additions during the kettle boil. We like how this gives the beer a fresh, lively flavor and aroma. 5.2%Alc. by Vol. 36IBUs

Levity Amber Ale

Levity is our lighter take on the amber ale. Munich and honey malts give it a full-bodied flavor and a happy-go-lucky personality. Then we let the finishing hops shine, for a beer that’s crisp instead of bitter. Levity was named by our brewers partly for its light color – and partly for the way it just refuses to take itself too seriously. Hey, we could all use a little levity once in a while. 5.1%Alc. by Vol. 24IBUs

Easy Street Wheat

Light and refreshing, Easy Street Wheat is an unfiltered American-style wheat beer. Leaving in the yeast gives the beer a nice, smooth finish and a slightly citrusy flavor. Easy Street Wheat gets its name by brewers “taking it easy” and not filtering the beer. However, for ultimate enjoyment, we encourage you to work just a little harder in pouring it: pour 2/3 of the beer into a glass, swirl what’s left to stir up the yeast, then pour the rest and enjoy. 4.6%Alc. by Vol. 15IBUs

Isolation Ale

A funny thing happens here around summer’s end – our eyes start searching the skies for those first fall flakes. As we welcome autumn’s first snow, we celebrate the return of Isolation Ale. A sweet caramel malty ale that is balanced by a subtle crisp hop finish. Whether you ski, shred, or shoe, Isolation Ale will inspire you to make first tracks. Available October through December “An excellent example of a traditional winter ale made with English hops. Not too sweet, no extra spices; added just a smooth, hoppy flavor.” – Douglas Brown The Denver Post 6.0% Alc. by Vol. 29 IBUs

St Lupulin

A mystical legend echoes in our brewhouse – that of St. Lupulin (loop-you-lin) the archetypal hophead. He devoted endless summers to endless rows of hops, tending to the flowers and the beloved resin within – lupulin. Extraordinary oils in this yellow resin provide this dry-hopped extra pale ale with an undeniably pleasing floral aroma and clean, crisp finish. One sip of this seasonal summer ale and you too, will believe. Available May through September. “The balance between malt and hops, bitter and smooth, is nearly perfect and makes for superb drinkability.” – Beer Advocate 6.5% Alc. by Vol. 46 IBUs

Red Ale

The Rocky Mountain Goat is no ordinary goat. Just like Odell Red is no ordinary red. We took the American style red to a whole new level by adding a variety of aggressive American hops giving this ale a distinctive fresh hop aroma and flavor. We think you’ll agree this red has some serious kick. Available January through April 6.5% Alc. by Vol. 50 IBUs

CELLAR SERIES

Amuste

Must is to wine as wort is to beer; the primordial ooze, the source and foundation, that feeds the process of fermentation we all love so much. Amuste is the culmination of a two year endeavor to marry these two fuels into the same fire. An Imperial Porter aged in oak wine barrels accented with juice from Tempranillo grapes grown on the Western Slope of Colorado, this harmonic combination is truly, a must. 9.3%Alc. by Vol.

The Meddler

A resurrected style from the Flemish region of Belgium, The Meddler oud bruin is a crafty concoction, comprised of several generations of brown ales, barrel aged and blended. Wild yeasts, Lactobacillus, and Brettanomyces meddle with the brew for over 18 months creating complexity and depth of flavor. Hints of malty sweet chocolate and vanilla toy with a hauntingly sour finish. Intricate yet balanced, The Meddler will leave you craving more of the mysterious brew. 8.9%Alc. by Vol.

Deconstruction

A method of brewing based on identifying first principals and making pronounced through pilot brewing the desired elements that contribute to the overall flavor.

A Golden Ale created by blending the final recipe with its own barrel aged pilot beers fermented with wild yeasts and lacto. Each individual barrel contributes a unique flavor from the wood chosen and the cultures resident to achieve the subtle complexities that develop(ed) over time. A beer which starts sweet, filling the mouth with fruit-like esters and mild spiciness, changing to a tart and lingering flavor reminiscent of apples and grapefruit living amidst an earthy, citrusy hop aroma. 42% aged in wine barrels 58% Ale 10.5% Alc. By Vol.

Pond Hopper

Doug Odell’s admiration for the British brewing culture has led him across the pond – a lot. In 2008, Doug landed at Thornbridge Brewery and in the company of kindred brewing spirits. This visit led to a collaboration brew at Thornbridge in 2010. Fast forward to 2012 to find the two breweries at it again, this time at Odell Brewing. Pond Hopper Double Extra Pale Ale is the love child of this international brewmance.

Foot Print

There are TEN states that make up what we call our ‘distribution footprint.’ Each state made a unique contribution to FOOTPRINT. This artful ale is our tribute to these states in which our beer is available. The result is a crafty collective of regional flavors: Colorado – Hops & Barley Arizona – Prickly Pear Idaho – Barley & Hops Kansas – Wheat Minnesota – Wild Rice Missouri – Oak Barrels Nebraska – Corn New Mexico – Green Chilis S. Dakota – Barley & Honey Wyoming – Wheat 9.5%Alc. by Vol.

Friek

FRIEK is an evolution, an imaginative amalgamation invented by our brewers. Multiple KRIEK Lambic style ales are fermented with WILD yeast and TART cherries and then moved into OAK BARRELS to age and sour taking on the CHERRY flavors. As the beer matures, FRAMBOISES (raspberries) from Schroyer Family Farms in Fort Collins are handpicked and readied for the beer. The fresh RASPBERRIES are added immediately prior to the final blending. The sweet and tart flavors MINGLE on the tongue with a sparkling dry finish. 6.5%Alc. By Vol.

FOUR PACK

Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout

If you’ve ever been to our brewery, you’ve likely seen the old, beat-up truck that hauls away our spent grain. That truck belongs to Lugene who’s been feeding his dairy cows the hearty malt for over a decade. Named in his honor, Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout is brewed with milk sugar and milk chocolate. The rich and creamy brew reminds us of a cold glass of chocolate milk and our hometown “Aggie” roots. Available January through March 8.5% Alc. by Vol.

Mountain Standard

As the Colorado hop growers prove they can produce world class hops, we as a Colorado Craft Brewer want to showcase what our state can offer, not only with our hand crafted beers, but also with the ingredients used in creating them. Mountain Standard, Double Black IPA, features the homegrown hops our Brewers helped pick from farms along Colorado’s western slope. MST pours committingly dark with a light tan head and a slightly roasted hoppy nose. An ephemeral bitterness, the result of combining roasted malts with an assertive American hop profile, contributes to MST’s act of balance and harmony. As the season’s darkness sets in, why shouldn’t your beer become darker too? Available yearly from September through December 9.5% ABV 60 IBU’s

Double Pilsner

We feel the eyes of tradition upon us whenever we brew our Double Pilsner. But this beer is not just our tribute to the classic Bohemian pilsner – it’s our own craft interpretation of it. Refreshing and delicate yet bold and assertive, its clear golden color leaves nowhere for imperfections to hide but plenty of room for mystery. Available yearly, May through September 8.1%ABV 39IBU’s

Myrcenary

Named for Myrcene, a component of essential oils in the hop flower, Myrcenary Double IPA is our tribute to those who revere the illustrious hop, and their unyielding exploit to craft hop forward beers. Brewed with a blend of hops containing the highest levels of Myrcene, this double IPA prevails with a tropical fruit-like flavor, a pungent floral aroma, and a clean getaway. Available Year Round 9.3%ABV 70IBU’s

Our beer isn’t just a beer. It’s great beer, and a great beer isn’t just about barley, water, yeast, and hops. A great beer is about the people that make it; it is an expression of who we are. Our craft, our passion, and our love captured in a bottle (or a glass) for you to enjoy. First, it starts with writing the recipes and the thoughtful selection of the ingredients that go in them. Ingredients only a chef would know, because our brewer, or beer chef, as we like to call him, spends his nine to five life (or ten to ten in the restaurant world) in a kitchen, as the Executive Chef of a seriously delicious restaurant called Centro Latin Kitchen. Beer Chef Ian Clark uses ingredients that aren’t unique for unique sake, but ingredients that bring out the best flavors in our beer. As any great chef knows, great recipes take patience. Our beer has the flavor only time can bring to it because we don’t believe a great beer can be made without allowing carbonation to occur naturally. That’s why we bottle and keg condition all of our beer. We also don’t filter or pasteurize it because after we’ve put in all of that good stuff, why would we take anything out? Last, our beer is great because not only does it go beyond the typical beer experience by using the skillful ingredients and the fine-tuned techniques that only a chef would know, our beer also has our values in it; like using wind power and eco-friendly chemicals, as well as composting, recycling, and donating 1% to the planet.

So while we may list all of the ingredients on our label, we’ve left out a few; passion, joy, honesty, creativity, technique, sleepless nights, and a whole lot of love. We hope when you’re in one of the restaurants or liquor stores that carry our beer you’ll buy one, and that this time your tilt, tip, and sip is followed by the bubbling flavor of handbuilt BRU.

Hey ~ When you’re the first microbrewery in Colorado, you can claim the city name for your beer! Personally, I’m a fan of the MoJo – are you picking up on an IPA theme yet?

History of Innovation

Boulder Beer’s Story:

In 1979 two professors at the University of Colorado received the 43rd brewing license issued in the United States, creating Boulder Beer Company, Colorado’s First Microbrewery. The original site of the brewery was a small farm northeast of Boulder, the brew house sharing space in a shed originally housing a few goats!

In a world of light yellow lagers, Boulder Beer won industry and consumer accolades for its line of bold Boulder Beers: Boulder Porter, Stout and Extra Special Bitter. Five years later, the brewery moved to it’s current site in Boulder and expanded from its original one-barrel brewing system to a 50-barrel brew house with top-of-the-line packaging equipment. In 1994 we converted the original tasting room to our full-menu pub and epic patio under the Flatirons.

Brewmaster David Zuckerman joined Boulder Beer in 1990, and soon introduced Colorado favorites Buffalo Gold and Singletrack Copper Ale, which are still popular today. Long time General Manager Jeff Brown became President of Boulder Beer in 2002, which was the same year that saw the packaged introduction of the innovative and widely heralded Hazed & Infused dry-hopped ale, an unfiltered dry-hopped amber ale. In 2003 Mojo India Pale hit the scene, and every year since then has ushered in new flavors and new styles of beer developed by our creative team of brewers, which often are on the cutting edge of craft brewing trends.

Our brewers continue to test boundaries with unique blends and combinations on our pilot brewing system and barrel-aged program. Stop in to our Pub for this week’s “Brewer’s Choice” and who knows, you could be sampling the first batch of The Next Big Thing!

Hazed & Infused Dry-Hopped Ale

This unfiltered amber ale is “Hazed” in its natural state and “Infused” during dry-hopping with Crystal and Centennial hops, creating a flavorful, aromatic brew unlike any before it. Tapping into the creative spirit that launched Colorado’s First Microbrewery, the brewers at Boulder Beer Company have blended together four different hop varieties to give Hazed a unique aroma, with just enough yeast for a full mouth feel and a smooth, easy finish. So sit back, relax and get hazed. 5% ABV

Mojo India Pale Ale

Introduced in 2003, this IPA from Colorado’s First Microbrewery is anything but traditional. Mojo India Pale Ale was inspired by the English who first shipped their ales to India and the Far East – but brewed with an attitude of the great American West. Pale in color but packed with flavor, Mojo reflects the perfect balance of hop bitterness and malt character. The unique Amarillo hop creates a big citrus flavor with an ultra-crisp dry finish. 7.2% ABV

Sweaty Betty Blonde Wheat Beer

Sweaty Betty Blonde is a refreshing, unfiltered Bavarian-style Hefeweizen. The Weinstephan yeast gives this brew subtle hints of clove and banana with an attractive, hazy blonde color. For the best flavor, rouse any settled yeast by swirling the bottom of the bottle.

5.2% ABV

Flashback India Brown Ale

Brewed using five separate hop additions, Flashback India Brown Ale boasts a citrusy flavor with a prominent hop aroma. Flashback finishes crisp and dry, with dark roasted flavors from the biscuit and chocolate malts perfectly complementing the bountiful Cascade hops. Originally brewed to commemorate our milestone 30th Anniversary, Flashback India Brown Ale earned a spot in our year-round line-up. Flash back to 1979 and you’ll find two professors at the University of Colorado in Boulder testing the entrepreneurial waters with a little project called a microbrewery. From the original Bitter, Porter and Stout recipes that founded our brewery, to our exciting new releases, Boulder Beer continues to uphold our tradition of innovation in brewing. 6.8% ABV

Buffalo Gold Golden Ale

A Colorado favorite since 1989, Buffalo Gold is the definitive golden ale. The mild maltiness gives way to a unique floral character generated by a perfect balance of Cascade hops. Our lightest beer in flavor, it’s an easy-drinking beer that still packs a stampede of flavor! 4.8% ABV

Singletrack Copper Ale

A refreshing, medium-bodied ale, Singletrack Copper Ale is brewed with toasted rye and caramel malt for a slight nutty flavor with a brilliant copper color. Reflecting a lifestyle adopted by many at our brewery and in Boulder, Singletrack is an homage to the two-wheeled athletes and weekend warriors pounding the narrow trails of our backyard mountains 4.9% ABV

Planet Porter

Planet Porter is a remarkably smooth dark ale. The generous use of black malt gives this brew a hint of coffee. Our oldest recipe dating back to 1979! 5.5% ABV

Mojo Risin’ Double IPA

Released annually in January. Mojo Risin’ double IPA is a souped-up, extreme version of the one and only Mojo IPA. We added more than a half ton of extra malt and twice the amount of Amarillo hops, so be prepared for a full sensory explosion. The double dry-hopped addition elevates the grapefruit-like aroma and flavor to an outrageous intensity, while the added malt raises the alcohol level to over 10% by volume.

80 IBU

Malts: Pale Malt, Wheat Malt, & 20L Caramel Malt

Hops: Amarillo & Centennial

Kinda Blue Blueberry Wheat Beer

Released annually in March/April. Perfect for summer, Kinda Blue is as cool as the day is long. A refreshing American Wheat with just the right amount of sweetness, aroma and blueberry. For those beer geeks out there, the blueberries are not added to the mash like many “fruit beers.” Rather, we add the organic Oregon blueberry puree to the cold fermenting wheat beer – much like dry-hopping – which gives this beer subtle notes of flavor. Try some today!

Malt: Honey Malt, Wheat Malt, Pale Malt

Hoopla Pale Ale

In search of the perfect festival beer, our Boulder Beer brewers and Kyle Hollingsworth, keyboardist of The String Cheese Incident and an avid homebrewer, joined creative forces. Imagination and improvisation flowed freely, and Hoopla was born. Hoopla Pale Ale is dry-hopped with generous amounts of Glacier hops for a fruity, floral hop aroma and flavor that will have your taste buds dancing.

40 IBU

Malt: Pale Malt, Carared Malt, Melanoidin Malt, Chocolate Malt

Hops: Nugget, Glacier, Centennia

Never Summer Ale

Released annually in October. Our brewers’ mission to create a satisfying cold weather brew resulted in Never Summer Ale, our version of a more aggressive winter seasonal. Deep ruby red in color, assertively hopped and brewed with dark caramel malt, Never Summer Ale makes even the coldest Colorado peaks seem warm. Never Summer Ale: For the Drinking Town with a Skiing Problem!

6.5% ABV

Killer Penguin Barleywine

Our extremely limited winter barleywine ale. Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting — not this bird! Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers. Aged to perfection, this beer doesn’t ferment, it hibernates — and wakes up with an attitude!

A Honey of a Saison

A Honey of a Saison is a swarm of flavor and a stinger at 11.5% ABV. The French Saison yeast produces big, estery, phenolic aromas and flavors, while the Wildflower Honey lends a spicy, sweet aroma with essence of dried fruits. Champagne Yeast is also used to complete fermentation and create a dry finish. A strong malt bill imparts a rich, golden honey color to the ale, and it shows low hop bitterness at 25 IBU’s.

Released 12/13/12

Nitro Mojo IPA

Our big, citrusy Mojo India Pale Ale, served nitro-style for a smooth, creamy finish that mellows the beer’s big hop punch.

Cold Hop British-Style Ale

With a nod to our founder’s roots as homebrewers, we tapped into the expertise of an old chum, Charley Papazian, author of “The Complete Joy of Homebrewing”. Expanding on one of his favorite recipes by giving it our own twist, our brewers crafted Cold Hop – a cult favorite here at Boulder Beer Company. Rich golden malts from Great Britain combined with rare, aromatic and flavorful Czech and New Zealand hops make up the backbone of Cold Hop, our modern take on British-style ale.

Freshtracks Wet-Hopped Copper Ale

The wet-hopped version of our Singletrack Copper Ale. Freshtracks is made using fresh-off-the-vine, still wet hops from the western slope of Colorado, allowing the beer to take on a unique hop profile from the oils that are typically evaporated during the hop kilning process. The result is a more citrusy, pineapple-like version of Singletrack that is perfect for harvest season.Look for Freshtracks in late summer or early fall!

Obovoid Oak-Aged Oatmeal Stout

Released annually in November – draft only. Obovoid: 1) An ovoid with the broad end toward the apex; 2) a fun word to say! Something tells us that you’re going to love Obovoid oak-aged oatmeal stout. Perhaps it’s the color – as dark as deep space. Or the aging on oak that adds an earthy character to its roasted notes. Maybe you crave the bitter-sweet chocolate finish derived from the abundance of black and chocolate malts. Or quite possibly the rich, smooth mouthfeel and creamy, off-white head tickle your fancy. But most likely, it’s the perfect blend of “all of the above” that makes Obovoid a stout-lover’s dream.

Beers from The Bull & Bush Brewery

I love going over to the Bull and Bush Brewery in Glendale and having one of their tasty burgers with cream cheese and chili strips – you have to try it – with one of their home brewed beers. What a treat!

All Bull & Bush Beers are available TO GO in 64 oz. GROWLERS!

Celebrating our first 41 years!

Growing up just down Colorado Boulevard from Glendale, when it was mostly fields of cow patties, identical twin brothers Dean and Dale Peterson often rode their bikes by the local dairy that would one day be the home of The Bull & Bush Pub and Brewery. In 1971, casting aside their stockbroker careers to become the bellwether personalities of the Denver restaurant industry in the 70s and 80s, the brothers built the Bull & Bush to kick start a list of successful restaurants.

A fact finding trip to the English countryside provided the Petersons with the concept of a pub modeled after the original Bull & Bush, a British pub located in Hampstead Heath near London that dates back to 1645. They spared no expense bringing back original artifacts and materials to give the restaurant an authentic feel… right down to the now warped copper top bar that still holds up cold beers, delicious food and regular patrons today.

The Bull & Bush opened its doors and soon found itself in the middle of Glendale’s heyday. Long before LoDo attracted the young socialite crowd, Glendale was rocking with the Denver party crowd and it wasn’t uncommon to see a line of people outside eagerly waiting to get through the Bull & Bush front door and into the action. Musical acts, friendly bartenders and the area’s first dart rooms entertained the crowds. Not long after the beer started flowing, two satellite dishes were placed on the roof, bringing in sporting events from around the world and creating the nation’s first “Sports Bar.”

Thanks to their sharp instincts, dedication and, above all, the “everybody’s welcome” culture that the Petersons inserted into the Bull & Bush surroundings, the bar still thrives with regular visitors of all ages. Glendale may have gone through several personality changes over the last 39 years, but everyone can always count on their neighborhood pub to remain the relaxed and friendly haven they’d grown to love.

While folks who have visited the Bull & Bush regularly for 40+ years may swear it is exactly the same as the first time they set foot in their favorite local watering hole, a few changes have been made along the way. A new generation of Petersons, Dale’s sons David and Erik, now run the show. Armed with the knowledge gained growing up watching their often-celebrated and locally famous father and uncle, David and Erik have continued the legacy by creating major expansions to the business.

A patio was added to provide enjoyable outdoor dining in the crisp Colorado climate and there have been a few additions to the full menu of tasty dishes carefully assembled in Rigo’s kitchen. On occasion, you may even see the Bull & Bush 1968 Cadillac limo in the restaurant parking lot.

In the mid-90s, the brothers had the game-changing idea to build a brewery adjacent to the restaurant. Since brewing its first batch on New Year’s Day of 1997, the Bull & Bush brewing operation has become world renowned for its great tasting and innovative creations. Master Brewer Gabe Moline’s brews have earned multiple accolades including the Best Beer in a Brewpub award in Westword’s Best of Denver, multiple awards at the annual Denver-hosted Great American Beer Festival (GABF) and most recently the Bull and Bush’s “The Legend of the Liquid Brain Imperial Stout” was given the highest honor, a Gold award, at the World Beer Cup – the world’s largest commercial beer competition.

But most of all it’s you, the loyal customers, that have made The Bull & Bush one of Colorado’s most revered landmarks. As Dale once put it, “This is what it’s all about if you’re in the tavern business. Fresh beer, the music, the camaraderie and friendship. Most restaurants, you might go in there once a year. Here you come in once a month, once a week… even once a day.”

We look forward to continuing the tradition for generations to come. Thank you for being a part of our story and The Granddaddy of Denver Watering Holes!

While Breckenridge Brewery does have operations in Denver, I am putting this in the “Colorado” category as they are based out of Breckenridge.

My favorite BB beer is the Avalanche – a good all-around medium body brew.

Back in the 1980s, our founder Richard Squire was your typical ski bum – with one significant difference. He had a knack for making extraordinary home brews. For years, only his closest friends were able to enjoy his creations, but it didn’t take long for Richard to realize that his talents needed to be shared with the world.

Lucky U IPA

Drink up fortuitous one.

We sure did. And the result is a well-balanced, soulful IPA with just the right amount of hoppiness. An even keeled ale that goes down clean and refreshing, but still lets you know it’s been doted on by the Brewmaster. It’s true to it’s IPA heritage, but also highly drinkable. Lucky U. And we seriously mean that.

Avalanche Ale

Slides down easy.

That’s what makes our Avalanche amber ale such a treat. We blend pale and caramel malts — and just a kiss of bittering hops — to create a refreshing-but-flavorful, anytime beer. Aromas of pale grains, a semi-sweet middle and a clean-as-Coloradosnow finish make this our best-selling beer.

Agave Wheat

Nectar of the beer gods.

Agave complements the refreshingly light quality of our wheat and adds a subtle note of flavor that expands this beer’s uplifting taste profile. It is familiar, yet creative.

Vanilla Porter

Remarkable. Partakable.

Deep in the jungles of Papua New Guinea and Madagascar grows the perfect ingredient for an extraordinary Porter brewed in Colorado. Breckenridge Brewery’s Vanilla Porter. An ale that has all the chocolate and roasted nut flavor of a classic Porter, with an enigmatic surprise thrown in for good measure.

Oatmeal Stout

Dark in character. Not in spirit.

It’s a bold, smooth-bodied concoction that oozes dark-roasted coffee aromas and flavors of espresso and semi-sweet chocolate. We round out these heady pleasures with a dose of flaked oatmeal for a creamy body and a semi-dry finish. Unforgettable.

SEASONAL

Pandoras Bock

Release the wealth of flavor and complexity unto the world.

Bottom fermented at colder temperatures for a smooth yet assertive character.

Autumn Ale

Time to dust off your Lederhosen.

Our fall seasonal combines the malty goodness of a German lager with the clean crispness of an American ale. Brewed with Munich malts and a delicate blend of Bavarian hops, it’s a full-bodied treat with a nutty-sweet middle, a warming alcohol level and notes of toasted grains. A pre-winter winner.

Christmas Ale

Bottled joy to the world.

The chill of a Colorado high-country winter calls for a beer with extra flavor and strength. Here it is. At over 7% alcohol, with a sturdy texture and rich flavors of caramel and chocolate, our holiday seasonal is the fermented equivalent of a good fire.

Summerbright Ale

Enjoy Poolside or Sprinklerside.

Breck Brew’s SummerBright is the result. The craftsman’s touch combines white wheat, two row pale and munich malt with the pacific northwest’s most intriguing hops to create a bright, clean ale ideal for picnicking, evenings on the screen porch and enjoying the whims of the summer breeze.

SMALL BATCH

Regal Pilsner

All hail our Brewmaster and the fruits of his labor, Regal Pilsner.

A double Pilsner with distinct hoppy attributes and a pronounced malty backbone. It is strong in character and steadfast in its resolve to provide maximum drinking pleasure. All hail our Brewmaster and the fruits of his labor, Regal Pilsner!

471 Small Batch

Hoppy? Brother, 471 IPA redefines hoppy.

471 is a small batch, limited edition ale that was created by our Brewmaster to separate the weak from the strong. 471 is a double IPA, that combines Pale, Munich, Caramel-30, Carapils and Torrified Wheat malts, with Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe and Fuggles hops. It has a big sweet mouthfeel, followed by more hoppiness than you’ve ever had at one time. Enjoy.

72 Imperial

Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Brewed with chocolate from Colorado’s very own Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Inc., this Imperial Chocolate Cream Stout is full of rich, toasted chocolate notes with hints of dark fruit. 72 Imperial will take you where you need to go. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

ESB

Extra, extra? You better believe it.

We like to say it’s double extra special. The balance of malt and hops makes it truly one-of-a-kind. Warming malt notes at the onset with a hop kick in the back and opens up to a nice dry finish. Our small batch ESB is a big, strong traditional ale with characteristics that break tradition and a complexity that constantly surprises.

BARREL AGED

Twenty

If you haven’t been drinking our beer for the last 20 years, you have some catching up to do.

We like to say it’s double extra special. The balance of malt and hops makes it truly one-of-a-kind. Warming malt notes at the onset with a hop kick in the back that opens up to a nice dry finish. Our small batch ESB is a big, strong traditional ale with characteristics that break tradition and a complexity and constantly surprise. Aged for 6 months in an Oak Whiskey Barrel.

Summer Cab Ride

The brewmaster’s goal: the perfect ale for summertime quaffing, nothing more.

Aged 14 weeks in a Cabernet Wine Barrel.

Well Built ESB

A brew well built.

This extra special brew was well built intentionally. In team effort with our neighbors and Colorado’s own, Stranahan’s Whiskey Distillery, we combined the warming malt notes and pronounced hop characteristics of our Small Batch ESB with their ambrosial whiskey flavors to create the first ever collaboration of its kind. Aged for 6 months in Well Built Oak Whiskey Barrels.

Strange Brewing Company is the realization of a dream shared by two out-of-work IT Techs, John Fletcher and Tim Myers. Two avid homebrewers, John and Tim had worked together at the Rocky Mountain News before that newspaper closed in February, 2009. Suddenly unemployed, they needed a Plan B. So with their combined retirement savings, Tim’s and John’s homebrew recipes, and Tim’s 20-gallon homebrew equipment, they set out to open Strange.

John started homebrewing small batches in his kitchen in 1989. Most batches were three gallons at a time, allowing John to try many recipes and improve on them. Tim’s first batch was for his wedding in 1997. After his third batch boiled over and flooded the kitchen, Tim was moved to the back deck. A chance encounter with a CraigsList ad in December 2005 for a professional brew sculpture lit the flame that eventually became Strange Brewing Company.

Strange opened on May 19th, 2010, as a one-barrel microbrewery. Starting out small allowed John and Tim to focus more on the recipes than on running and building a small business. Brewing one barrel at a time allowed them to experiment and tweak, refining recipes for the day when a larger brew system would be employed.

Strange Pale Ale

Strange Pale Ale is brewed in the American Style. Big and hoppy, but balanced and incredibly drinkable. We use five different malts to give Strange Pale Ale a malty complexity and four different hops to balance all that malt and give Strange Pale Ale its huge hop character.
5.5% ABV 40 IBUs

IPAphany India Pale Ale

An epiphany. That’s what Strange’s Head Brewer Tim Myers had right before he wrote down the recipe for IPAphany IPA. Tim was never what you’d call a “hophead”. That is until about five years ago when he tasted a certain Colorado IPA that was so balanced, so hoppy yet so malty, it opened Tim’s eyes to a whole new world of beers. So he rushed home and began creating his own IPA. The end result after five years of tweaking homebrew batches is Strange IPAphany IPA. A big, malty, hoppy, well-rounded, lusciously smooth and drinkable India Pale Ale.
7.0%ABV 65 IBUs

Strange Wit

Belgian’s brewing beginnings trace back to the middle ages. We’re fast-forwarding this traditional favorite with generous portions of both malted and unmalted wheat. Just the right amount of spices are added to compliment all that hazy wheat goodness. The perfect drink on a hot summer day or winter evening in the Rockies. Enjoy!
5.4% ABV 22 IBUs

Le Bruit Du Diable

Our spin on a classic Belgian farmhouse ale. We start with high quality Belgian Pilsner malt and add some Belgian Caramel Vienne and Caramel Munich for color and complexity. Bring it back down to earth with just the right amount of Czech Saaz hops to provide refreshing balance. Fermented hot with a very special yeast strain from the Wallonia region of Belgium, this unique yeast gives our Diable its earthy, fruity, spiciness and dry malt character.
7.5% ABV 42 IBUs

Bel’Hop’D Belgian Pale Ale

Take some Belgian malts, hop generously with Amarillo, Simcoe, and Cascade hops, then ferment with a tasty Belgian Abbey yeast. The result? Strange Bel’Hop’D Belgian Pale Ale–on the dark side with moderate fruity orange hues and soft, sip-able sweetness.
5.0% ABV 40 IBUs

Tainted Black Pale

First brewed the same day a certain British company tainted something much larger than a boil kettle, Tainted Black Pale is a hybrid searching for an identity.
Is it a really hoppy stout? Or a really roasty pale ale? Tainted Black Pale
defies classification so we won’t box it in. What we do know is it’s one tasty
brew.
6.0% ABV 60 IBUs

Cherry Bomb Belgian Stout

What do you get when you throw the wrong malt into a batch of Belgian Wheat?
A happy mistake! That’s how Strange’s Head Brewer Tim Myers stumbled across this Tasting Room favorite. Rather than dump the batch, Tim decided to create the world’s first Belgian Wheat Stout. Gobs of Carafa III give this Belgian Wheat a delicious roastiness. Montmorency Tart Cherries give it a tart snap that will pucker you silly.
5.4% ABV 46 IBUs

Cherry Kriek

We named this Strange ‘Cherry Cherry’ because that’s what it is. There’s so much cherry in this beer even its foamy head is red! We start with a Dark Belgian Wheat recipe, cram it full of Montmorency Tart Cherry goodness, then age it with oak. The result is a cherry cherry lovers dream come true. Goes great with dark chocolate, with fudge brownies, with chocolate gateau, with cacao nibs, with…well you get the picture. And did we mention cherries?
4.7% ABV 15 IBUs
